On November 20 at approximately 12:30pm, officers with the Chipley Police Department responded to the Marathon Gas Station located next to the courthouse. The call was in reference to a subject that stole a woman’s purse from her car while she went into the store to pay for her gas.
The victim in this case is from Jackson County. What the thief did not realize is that a Washington County resident was sitting in his truck at the same store and witness the incident. The thief then got on his bicycle and fled the scene on 2nd Street by the old Chipley High School. The witness called 911 and proceeded to follow
the suspect in his truck.
The witness then made contact with the suspect and actually held him until CPD officer arrived. Officers arrested 20 year old Deronta Turner of Glenwood avenue Chipley. Officers located the victim’s purse behind a home where the suspect discarded the purse in an attempt to hide it. All the contents were returned to the victim.
After talking with this guy he told me that he recently moved to Chipley from Atlanta. We would not have caught this thief if it had not been for the help of one of our residents. Turner was transported to the Washington County Jail where he has been charged with burglary.
