Man Shoots Himself During Traffic Stop

MONTGOMERY POST – An Alabama State Trooper conducted a traffic stop at approximately 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, of a red pickup in the area of U.S. 231 near Wind Creek Casino in Wetumpka. A Tribal Police Officer was in the area and assisted the Trooper. During the traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle produced a firearm and shot himself. No shots were fired by the Trooper or the Tribal Police Officer, and no one else was injured. The driver, identified as Raymond Dawkins, 56, of Montgomery, was pronounced dead at the scene. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Task Force is investigating the incident. The SBI Task Force’s findings will be turned over to the District Attorney.
