The Equal Justice Initiative Tuesday filed a complaint with the U.S. Justice Department calling for a federal investigation into what it calls the widespread sexual abuse of female inmates by male guards at Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetempka.
EJI, in a written release, said it has found "frequent and severe" officer-on-inmate sexual violence. EJI claims to have interviewed more than 50 women housed at the prison. EJI also said several women have become pregnant after they were raped by security guards.
Stevenson's group last year filed a lawsuit claiming Doug Valeska, District Attorney for Houston and Henry Counties, routinely attempted to keep blacks off juries, especially during trials involving capital murder. A federal court earlier this year dismissed the lawsuit.
