The Merle Wallace Purvis Center near Geneva was a focal point of excitement Wednesday afternoon as a crowd gathered for a grant presentation from the Wiregrass RC&D Council through the Geneva County ARC. $1,000 from the general fund and $7528 from educational funds will be used to upgrade facilities in the main building and construction of a nature trail and outdoor classroom behind the main facility.

Geneva County ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens) members Barbara Adkison (President), Bert Robinson, Pam Fleming, Donna Logan, and Annette Kervin were on hand to receive the grant monies. Barbara Adkison and ARC will work with James Currington, NRCS-Geneva FO; and Janie B. Howell, Geneva County SWCD; to complete the work on this project.

Brenda Murphy, Director of the Purvis Center; and Anita Whitfield, ID Service Director of MR Division (SpectraCare Health Systems) were on hand and gave the group a tour of the Purvis Center exercise department. Mrs. Murphy said she appreciates any donations that the Geneva County ARC and the Wiregrass RC&D Council contribute to the Purvis Center.

Senator Harri Anne Smith and Representative Warren Beck both are instrumental in securing funds for the RC&D Program in Alabama. They were both present to congratulate the Purvis Center on their grant award for 2010.

Senator Smith is delighted that the Center secured the funding and said, “The Purvis Center is off the beaten path and does not receive the attention it deserves. I will continue to support the Purvis Center in the future and hope that others will take the opportunity to ride out and visit this wonderful facility.

Representative Beck is excited to have RC&D funds coming to Geneva County and said, “I am proud to have the Purvis Center in Geneva and am committed to helping the Merle Wallace Purvis Center in the future in any way that I can.”

Larry Everett, T. Louis Register, Steve Dunn and Roy Powell are members of the Wiregrass RC&D Council. They have worked hard to obtain funding for the Purvis Center and their clients.

Fred Hamic, Probate Judge; Roy Powell, Engineer for Geneva County; Ray Minshew, Commissioner; and Larry Everett, Commissioner, were all on hand to show Geneva County’s commitment to improvements to the Purvis Center.

The most excited group on hand were the clients at the Center who showed their enthusiasm for the renovations to their School.
