Mobile cop killer scheduled to die tonight

Alabama death row inmate Vernon Madison is set to be executed tonight, unless his final round of appeals proves successful.


The execution will be carried out by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.


Madison, 65, has spent nearly half his life on death row after his conviction in the slaying of Mobile police Cpl. Julius Schulte in April 1985.


Schulte, a 22-year veteran of the Mobile Police Department, was responding to a domestic call. Known as "Sonny" by friends, he was a big, gregarious man who always had the time to help a fellow officer or a parent concerned a child was getting into trouble.
