Montgomery County Georgia Sheriff Killed in High-speed Chase; Suspect on the Run

MONTGOMERY CO., GA (WTOC) - A high-speed chase overnight in Montgomery County has ended in tragedy.
It started as traffic stop in Toombs County. Deputies tried to pull a vehicle over, but it took off instead and a chase ensued.
The suspects have been identified as 35-year-old Jim Edward Lowery and 36-year-old Dixie Best. At one point, Lowery and Best reportedly fired shots at the deputies.
Montgomery County Sheriff Ladson O'Connor had joined the chase as backup when it came his way.

A crash happened during the chase on Georgia Highway 56 near the Toombs/Montgomery County line.
Officials have confirmed that the crash took the life of Sheriff O'Conner. It has not been confirmed if the sheriff's truck was hit during the chase, but it did crash, killing him.
Deputies arrested Best, but Lowery remains on the run. He is described as a white male, 6'1 weighing about 220 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Deputies, state troopers and SWAT teams have assembled and are currently searching for Lowery, including by helicopter. They are still trying to figure out why the duo did not pull over when deputies attempted to stop them.
