MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -A firefighter with the Montgomery Fire Department has been arrested and charged with stealing from a volunteer fire department, investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirm.
Wesley Thomas, 29, of Montgomery, was arrested Wednesday on a first degree theft charge that was brought after the Rolling Hills Fire Department reported criminal activity regarding its funds.
When reached for comment, Martha Earnhardt with the Montgomery Department of Public Safety released a statement that said the arrest resulted in Thomas being immediately relieved of his duties as a first responder assigned to suppression. He's been with the department since 2007.
Thomas is still employed by the city. He's "on alternative duty pending adjudication of the criminal charge against him," according to Earnhardt's statement. She further stated that because the case is being handled by Montgomery County, Montgomery Fire and Rescue cannot provide any additional details about the circumstances of the investigation.
