PHOENIX, AZ (WSFA) - Montgomery is now home to the 2014 World Champions after being named Sunday the victor of the Firefighter Combat Challenge World Challenge XXIII held in Phoenix, Arizona. The members of the Montgomery Fire/Rescue Department went up against some of the best firefighting teams in the world and managed to set new records in the competition.

“The bar is now much higher for future competitions, thanks to an amazing showing by Montgomery's Bravest," said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. "These courageous firefighters are dedicated to serving our city on a daily basis, and in doing so, they are shining examples of the best in our community and the best in the world.”

The Montgomery team set a new world record-breaking time of 1:07.60 in the relay, toppling the previous world record, set in 2010. After breaking the record, the Montgomery team - just hours later - set another new world record of 1:07.22, cementing its place as the 2014 World Champions.

The competition is designed to promote fitness and highlight readiness and skills that firefighters must have to do their jobs.

“Firefighting is hard, physically demanding work, and every second counts,” Montgomery Fire Chief Miford Jordan said. “As firefighters, when we improve in fitness and health, we improve the quality of our service to the public.”

Montgomery's firefighters, who joined the competition in 2010, had to battle other teams in five events including: forcible entry, victim rescue, the hose hoist, the hose advance, and the high-rise pack carry all while wearing 50 pounds of gear and racing the clock.
