HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- One day in January of 2013, Sgt. Chad Brooks holds Deputy Justin Watson after roll call. Brooks says there's a problem with the Robert Bryant arrest and with Watson's testimony.
By now, Brooks has interviewed several witnesses who had been at Billy's Sports Bar that night.
Watson comes clean.
"At this point, Deputy Watson (without being asked further by myself) advised that his answer to the defense attorney's question regarding his past interaction with the defendant was problematic because he was aware that Bryant was the man with whom he fought at Billy's Bar," Brooks writes.
Brooks asks why Watson answered the way he did. Watson tells Brooks he wasn't sure at the time of the traffic stop that Bryant was the same guy.
Watson says: "I guess I didn't know how to answer that question without making myself look guilty."
