There’s probably a lot you can think of, but for me the number one thing I can teach my child is how to cook so they can become self-sufficient in life. Learning how to cook also saves money in the long run (versus eating out) plus is generally healthier (because you control the fat and sodium in it) and cooking can be fun and enjoyable with so many types of foods to cook.
For that reason, Tyndall Federal Credit Union and the Tri-State BBQ Festival wish to promote cooking skills among students of all ages through the 2nd annual “Kids Cook” competition in Dothan.
The Kids Cook will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Houston County Farm Center during the 9th annual Tri-State BBQ Festival. Students will compete in their own division, while professional cooks, chefs and pitmasters wage their own separate culinary battle. The student division has two age groups (8-12 and 13 -18) and the student chefs will be grilling hamburgers in their division.
The students are competing for $300 in prize money and trophies, with the grand prize winner in each division winning $100 cash. Trophies will be awarded to the top five in each age group. The cost to participate is $10 and each participant will receive two admission tickets to the Tri-State BBQ Festival ($20 value), a pound of ground beef, four buns and an apron. Students need to bring their own grill and any seasonings or condiments used in the contest. The contest is limited to the first 25 entrants in each age group.
Tyndall Federal Credit Union is pleased to support this competition and promote activities for the youth in our community. Tyndall Federal will also have a booth space at the 9th annual Tri-State BBQ Festival and will be on hand to discuss not only their community involvement but will also be giving away prizes at their booth. Their mascot, Ty the Turtle, will award the Kids Cook prizes at 2:00 pn April 12th.
