HOUSTON COUNTY: Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver scheduled a press conference for 10 AM this morning. The purpose of the press conference was to address the removal of the stickers " Blessed Are The Peacekeepers" from the Sheriff Patrol vehicles.
Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza removed the stickers following a directive from Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver and County Commission Administrator Bill Dempsey. The directions from them to the Sheriff was if you do not follow the recommendation of the commission then all legal expenses will be the responsibility of the Sheriff Valenza.
Sheriff Valenza's funding to operate the Sheriff Office comes from the appropriations from the Houston County Commission. The operating budget of the Sheriff Office has been cut for the operating year 2015 - 2016.
A position of the commission through emails furnished to me from citizens have been the decision was that of the Sheriff. However when the money source, the commission, tells the Sheriff if you do not follow the recommendation of the commission then you are on a financial island alone, what choice did Sheriff Valenza have?
Chairman Culver wanted Sheriff Valenza to attend the press conference with him. Sheriff Valenza would not and was scheduled to be out of town this week.
Several attorneys in Dothan have offered to represent the Sheriff Department for free. While the attorney fees of the complainant ( Plaintiff ) is what the commission have been worried about. The attorney's have said you let them file the complaint first and see what laws they cite and what their complaint is. Then a decision is made, legally, how the fight will go.
However, with a 42 cent stamp, the Houston County Commission Chairman caved on the issue. Sheriff Valenza was willing for the fight. However without the support of the commission it was a fight Sheriff Valenza could not continue with.
NOTE: Anyone that knows Sheriff Valenza, the stickers on the patrol vehicle was not about politics or social media. The decision was based on two deputies in his 35 year tenure with the department who took their life. It was also about struggles the deputies encounter and was placed on the patrol cars to remind the officers of why they are law enforcement officers.
Sheriff Valenza is a law enforcement officer. He is not a politician.
