Officers respond to domestic violence calls on a daily basis. Many times a verbal dispute is all that has transpired. Sometimes, the dispute turns physical and violence erupts. This was the case on a Wednesday in November, 2014 when Sergeant Waidene Bayne responded to a domestic disturbance on Sloss Avenue in DeFuniak Springs. Sergeant Bayne arrived and found the male suspect attacking the female victim. The suspect had torn her clothing off and was holding her down. The suspect was immediately arrested.

The victim advised Sergeant Bayne that she was only in town for a court hearing the next day. She had received a ride using Tri-County Transportation and was just going to stay in the streets till the next morning so she would not be late. The victim had no money, no transportation, and was left without clothing.

Sergeant Bayne bought the victim two sets of clothes, food, beverages, and put her up in a room at a local Motel. All of the expenses were paid for out of Sgt. Bayne’s own pocket and were done without seeking recognition. It was only after the victim’s Attorney informed the court of Sgt. Bayne’s generosity that it even came to light. Sgt. Bayne had not told anyone of her actions and did not want recognition.

Chief Mark Weeks was contacted by a local Judge and advised of Sgt. Bayne’s selfless act. “This is beyond the call of duty and deserves recognition. Officers do have to deal with victims of crimes every day, but it is not every day that they pay to help someone out of their own pocket. Sgt. Bayne did this from her heart and was compassionate. This quality we desire in all of our Officers and applaud Sergeant Bayne for being so generous,” stated Chief Weeks.

Sergeant Bayne was recently recognized and given a letter of commendation for her efforts by Chief Weeks.
