Oktoberfest is an annual fall festival which first began in Munich, Germany. It is associated with the consumption of special October fest (malty) beer and traditional German foods, along with general merrymaking and dancing. With a few exceptions due to wars, Germans have celebrated Oktoberfest every year since 1810, although the early version of the event was dramatically different than the modern incarnation. Many communities around the world host their own versions of Oktoberfest every year, encouraging people to celebrate German heritage and join together in fellowship. The traditional time to celebrate Ocktoberfest ranges from the 3rd weekend of September through the first saturday of October, but traditionally is the last weekend in September.
The Wiregrass has two Oktoberfest Celebrations next weekend. The first is Friday night the 26th at Fort Rucker. If you go, be prepared to have your car searched for safety reasons. All visitors must provide automobile registration, proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license to gain access to the installation, and all visitors in the car over the age of 16 should also have valid identification. The Oktoberfest goes from 4:30-9:30 and features German beers and foods, plus a pumpkin patch for the kids. Visit http://www.ftruckermwr.com/special-events/ for information
Also next weekend at the Houston County Farm Center is PorktoberQue. It’s an Oktoberfest plus a barbecue competition (thus the name). It is Friday September 26 from 5-10pm and also on Saturday September 27 from 10-6. It is a family-friendly event featuring a polka area, outside stage with rock music, free bounce houses for the kids, car show, Ultimate Air Dogs competition, Man cave with TV’s to watch the game, shopping with vendors, bratwursts, Sam Adams Octoberfest Beer, Yuengling Oktoberfest beer, BBQ tasting tent, obstacle course competition (free to participate), corn hole tournament, and lots of other fun activities. Visit www.PorktoberQue.com or call (334) 699-1475 for information. Admission $3 per person, children 6 and under free. Proceeds help benefit the Regional Land Water Rescue.
