William Howard Holley, Sr better known in Headland as Doc Holley, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012. "Doc" Holley was a 1929 graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institue (now Auburn University) with a degree in Pharmacy. At the age of 103, Auburn University awarded Mr. Holley the Golden Eagle Award for being the oldest male alumnus. Mr. Holley passed away at the age of 105.
Mr. Holley was retired as the owner and operator of Holley's Pharmacy which was located on the Square in Headland. Those of us fortunate enough to call Headland our home when Doc Holley's drug store was open remember the soda fountain and the coke floats, suicides, cherry cokes and root beer. Penny Jones, owner of the Sparrow's Nest in Headland posted that she remembers the late Dr. Edwin Morriss, dearly loved physician for many of us, telling us to go get "Doc" to stir us up some of that good cough syrup! Penny also tells that Doc Holley did the fast walking sport all over Headland in the wee hours of the am, like 4 am. He was a remarkable example for many of us. My husband remembers that the local doctor, Dr. Martin, would send the patient up the sidewalk to Holley's to get the vacine for shots (tetnus). Dr. Martin was the local Doctor before Dr. Morriss. As stated in his obituary, this community will always remember Doc Holley for his many years of service, kindness, generosity and wisdom.
To the family we say thank you for sharing your father and grandfather with our community. Our prayers are with you!
