Gunfire erupted near Interstate 65 in Jefferson County Monday afternoon, wounding a Warrior police officer and two suspects who were fleeing from police.

The police officer received only minor injuries after he was shot once in his protective vest. Both suspects were also shot, but officials said they don't know the severity of their wounds. The two suspects were in surgery at UAB Hospital as of 4:30 p.m. The officer was checked out, also at UAB, and has since been released.

The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. on the access road at Exit 280 that connects U.S. 31 to Interstate 65. Authorities say Warrior police were trying to stop two men, at least one of whom had outstanding arrest warrants. The suspects had already eluded them in earlier in the day.

As the suspects' vehicle, a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was passing under I-65, officers and deputies from surrounding law enforcement agencies helped Warrior to box in the suspects. Once stopped with nowhere to go, lawmen say, a passenger in the Monte Carlo opened fire on the Warrior officer. Gunfire was exchanged and both suspects were shot.
