DOTHAN, Ala. – Dothan-based organizing committee PACE (Proclaiming America’s Call for Equality) will host its second annual Freedom Speaks: The Call of Lincoln and King speech competition for Wiregrass area students at 6 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2017, on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday. The event will be held at Wiregrass Church in Dothan.
A total of 10 students from participating schools will be selected from preliminary competitions in December to compete in the January Freedom Speaks event for awards equaling $5,000 in scholarships among a first, second and third-place winner. Each of the participants will present either President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address or a pre-selected portion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech.
The mission of Freedom Speaks is to challenge, encourage and motivate students to develop a better understanding of history and its application in today’s world while also providing an avenue for the students to personally excel in competition. A panel of judges will score participants on dress and overall appearance, delivery and style, quality and clarity of the presentation.
PACE was organized in 2015 to promote America’s foundation that all men and women are created equal. Founding members of PACE are Dr. W. Charles Lewis, senior pastor of Dothan Community Church; Rosaland Harrison, coach and consultant of IndelibleMark Coaching and Consulting Services, LLC; and Billy McCarthy and Donald P. Bolden of CapSouth Partners, Inc. in Dothan.
Wiregrass Church is located at 900 W. Main St. in Dothan. Doors to the Freedom Speaks event open at 5:15 p.m. on January 16. Admission is free.
