On 02/13/2014 at around 8:15AM Officers with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Henry County/Abbeville Criminal Investigative Unit, Headland Police Department, and the Alabama State Troopers responded to a report of a Robbery on County Road 20 near Headland, AL. Upon officers arrival they found that a 62 year old female had been attacked by two male suspects identified as Russel Dee Weaver, age 30 of Taylor who was armed with a 9mm handgun and Christopher Lee McWhorter aka “Smiley”, age 29 of Dothan who was armed with a stun gun. McWhorter is reported to have discharged the stun gun in his pocket striking himself before attacking the victim.

The investigation was led off by a call from a concerned citizen who observed a suspicious vehicle driving in the area and called in the tag number. Additional tips from the community led to the location of the suspects who had fled to Dothan and were ultimately located by officers with the Dothan Police Department and the Houston County Sheriff’s Office. Weaver was located at the Knights Inn and McWhorter was located at the Quality Inn on the Ross Clark Circle.

During the investigation the suspects were also linked to a burglary that had occurred on Highway 134 East near County Road 15. This burglary occurred shortly before the County Road 20 Incident. This burglary is being investigated by the Headland Police Department with the assistance of the Henry County/Abbeville Criminal Investigative Unit.

Sarah Melia West, age 31 of Rehobeth was also arrested and charged with her involvement in the planning and assistance in the Burglaries as well as the Robbery. She is charged with Conspiracy to commit Robbery 1st Degree, Conspiracy to commit Burglary in the 1st and Conspiracy to commit Burglary in the 2nd Degree. During the search for the suspects involved three other individuals were taken into custody but were later released after it was determined that they had no direct involvement in the incidents in Henry County.

The Henry County/Abbeville Criminal Investigative unit would like to show our appreciation to the Dothan Police Department, Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Headland Police Department, Dale County Sheriff’s Office, Troopers with the Alabama State Troopers, as well as all the members of the community that helped in bring these individual to justice. Without the watchful eyes of the community this crime would not have been solved as quickly as it was.

Currently all the suspects are being held in the Henry County Jail without bond pending a bond hearing on 02/18/2014 at 2 PM.
