On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at approximately 4:30am, the Headland Police received a call requesting medical assistance at 213 Hollon Street.  The call was received stating a subject was having possible seizures, suffered from schizophrenia and was off his medication.  When medics arrived, both medics were assaulted and requested officers to respond.  When the first officer arrived, the subject ran to the patrol car, began beating on the driver side window, as the officer attempted to back up, the subject opened the driver side door, and started assaulting the officer while dragging the officer out of the patrol car.  The officer discharged one round from his service weapon missing the subject where he fled to the rear of a residence.

A second officer arrived on scene, heard the initial gunshot and saw the first officer lying on the ground.  As the backup officer went toward the first officer on the ground, the subject came from the side of a residence and began to charge the backup officer.  The officer gave multiple commands for the subject to stop and get on the ground.  As the backup officer attempted to back away from the subject, the subject continued to charge the backup officer.  When the subject got into close contact with the officer, the officer fired one round striking the subject in the middle torso.

The subject was treated at the scene by emergency personal and was transported to a local hospital.  Both officers and medics were transported to a local hospital for treatment and were later released.

Headland Police Department was assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Abbeville Police Department.  The investigation has been turned over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigations.
