[DOTHAN, ALABAMA] (May 10, 2016) - When mental illnesses or disorders are talked about, the language typically used to describe them tends to be clinical and impersonal. These words, while useful for health professionals, often don’t do justice to what life with a mental illness feels like. That is why this year’s theme for May is Mental Health Month—Life With a Mental Illness—is a call to action to share what life with a mental illness feels like to someone going through it.

This Mental Health Month, individuals are encouraged to speak up about how it feels to live with a mental illness. With this effort in mind, The Honorable Patrick Davenport, Houston County Probate Judge, will be presenting a proclamation in recognition of Mental Health Month. The proclamation will be signed during a press conference on May 12, 2016 at 10:30 AM in the second floor courtroom inside the Houston County Probate Office. Please join Judge Davenport and members of the mental illness prevention and treatment community, as we urge increased awareness about the importance of mental health and well- being, encourage prevention and treatment, and foster stigma reduction.

One in four American adults live with a diagnosable mental health disorder. Recognizing May as Mental Health Month is meant to help remove the shame and stigma of speaking out, so that more people can be comfortable coming out of the shadows and seeking the help they need. Mental illnesses are common and treatable, and help is available. Sharing is the key to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and to showing others that they are not alone in their feelings and their symptoms.
