According to (WDHN): With more than 1,600 people and standing room only, Fort Rucker hosted a public forum on sequestration. People from around the Wiregrass expressed what they say is a major threat to economy. Members of the pentagon said they took notes.
"We know how many buildings there are, how many ranges there are. What we want is the context. We want to get the Fort Rucker story from the community,” said Brigadier General Roger Cloutier with the U.S. Army.
Cloutier says they analyzed a reduction of up to 2,500 spaces at Fort Rucker.
"That's worst case, [in terms of] what would be the impact if 2,500 spaces were removed. That doesn't mean that's how many are going to be taken. No decisions have been made at all, but that just kind of gives us a backdrop of how far we could go,” Cloutier said.
Many legislators, including U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) and State Representative Paul Lee (R-Dist. 86) stated their case during the forum.
“I'm glad to see that so many people showed up tonight, just to let Congress and the Pentagon know that we really support Fort Rucker down here. Just like Fort Rucker needs us, we need Fort Rucker,” said State Representative Dexter Grimsley (D-Dist. 85).
Many attending the forum say it's not just about job losses. It's about relationships.
