Dothan — In commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the House of Ruth and the Exchange Center for Child Abuse Prevention will be hosting their annual Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, October 13th at 5:30 p.m.
The purpose of the event is to celebrate the survivors of domestic violence, remember those who have been lost, and unite our communities to end domestic violence. Local speakers and music will create a mood of reflection and contemplation. The event will feature a “Silent Witness” exhibit—a moving tribute to the 8 local women who lost their lives this year to domestic violence—and will conclude with a release of purple balloons to honor those who have suffered at the hands of loved ones.
The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held at Wiregrass Church. All are encouraged to wear purple, which is the awareness color for domestic violence. Vigil candles will be provided by Zonta Club of Dothan.
The House of Ruth was created in 1982 to provide safe, temporary shelter for battered women and their children seeking escape from their violent homes. The Exchange Center for Child Abuse Prevention provides free counseling services to victims of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault.
