Former Helena Police Chief Doug Jones, who retired last year after 34 years in law enforcement, has died.
Jones, 59, died Friday night from heart complications. "Chief Jones is remembered mostly for his great love and dedication to the City of Helena and his friendship and concern for the men and women of the Helena Police Department and for all City of Helena employees,'' Chief Pete Folmar said in a statement released this morning. "Chief Jones served the people of his hometown with great distinction for 34 years before retiring."
Jones retired in September 2015, citing health issues. He started as a Helena police dispatcher more than three decades ago and worked his way up through the ranks to serve as the department's K-9 officer for 10 years before becoming the city's investigator in 2000. He was named acting police chief in February 2004 and he was selected as the full-time replacement later that year.
