SAMC Announces Neuro Critical Care unit set to open later this month

The Neuro Critical Care Unit is slated to open on Wednesday, September 21. Tena Knight, director of the unit, said it will open with four beds initially. She said there are approximately 18 employees currently ready to man the unit. It is on the second floor in the former CCU near the current surgery waiting room.
The following types of patients will be cared for in the Neuro Critical Care Unit:
- Traumatic brain injury or severe head injured patients
- Acute Ischemic Stroke requiring activase
- Acute subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Intracranial hemorrhage with potential for herniation
- Patients with hydrocephalus requiring close monitoring and observation or placement of external ventricular drainage system
- Cerebral aneurysm
- Vasospasm
- Recent major neurosurgical procedures or neuro-endovascular procedures or head and neck pathology
- Unstable neurological status or severe neurological disorders
