On October 12, 2012, the Samson Voulnteer Fire Department along with the Flat Creek Volunteer Fire Department taught Fire Prevention to Elementary School children. The Firefighters first went into the classrooms and showed the kids what they looked like before they put their gear on. They then put their gear on piece by piece describing each piece of gear to the children. They showed the children what a Firefighter looked like when they go to scenes. The Firefighters then brought their friend, Sparky in the classroom. Sparky told the children that they should not play with matches. Sparky also told the children to STOP, DROP, AND ROLL if they caught on fire. The Firefighters then got Junior Firefighter helmets. The Fire Department had red hats for boys and pink hats for girls.
The children were then brought outside to see the fire trucks. The children were able to tour Samson’s Tanker and Flat Creek’s Engine. The Firefighters showed them what tools they use on their different scenes. For exmple, they showed them the Jaws of Life for car wrecks. The children then went to the "Smoke House". The children all sat in a bedroom of the Smoke House trailer. The Firefighters asked the children what they should do if they start to see smoke. The children told the Firefighters that Sparky told them to get low on the floor and crawl to an exit. The Firefighters then asked the children what they should do before opening a door. The children told them they should feel of the door with the back of their hand to see if it is hot. If the door is hot, they do not want to open the door. The Firefighters then filled the Smoke House full of smoke to test the children’s knowledge. NOTICE: This smoke was not real smoke and was perfectly harmless.
After getting out of the Smoke House safely, the children thanked the Firefighters for coming over and went back to class. The children were so happy to see the Fire Department’s vehicles and Sparky.
