Sarasota Florida Man Charged Dealing in Stolen Property and Grand Theft

On 9-16-14 at approximately 12:41 hrs. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Love’s Truck Stop, located at 2510 Hwy 231, to a reported suspicious incident.

     Subsequent to their arrival, deputies learned that a truck driver had been approached in the back parking lot by a man that needed money for fuel. The trucker purchased two moving dollies and several padded blankets designed to prevent furniture from being damaged in transit.

     The male subject approached the trucker again shortly thereafter and offered to sell him a dining room suite and a television for $50. The man pretended to go along with the suspect and advised him that he would get the money.

     While stalling for time, he checked the internet for contact information on the trucking company. Once he made contact, the man learned that the truck, a 6-wheel, 24 foot box Freightliner, was stolen from Sarasota Florida.

     The owner of the truck contacted the Sheriff’s Office and a deputy was able to take the suspect, Danny Lee Gregory, into custody.

     The man claimed that he was not the driver of the vehicle, nor was he the person that sold the items. However, a hitchhiker that was riding with him confirmed that they had been together since the previous day and that Gregory was, in fact, the driver. Gregory was also identified by the trucker that called law enforcement and was found behind the wheel of the truck with the keys in his possession.

     Based on the value of the truck, Gregory was charged with Grand Theft over $50,000, a 2^nd degree felony. He was also charged with Dealing in Stolen Property for selling and attempting to sell property that did not belong to him, which is also a 2^nd degree felony.

     Gregory was lodged in the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
