Montgomery– Last week, Special Agents assigned to the Narcotics Unit of ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) began eradication efforts, seizing 2,034 marijuana plants – the only major drug grown domestically.
Summer marks the beginning of the growing season for the illegal drug that will eventually end up on the street. For the next several weeks, SBI Narcotics and ALEA Aviation will team with state, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies across Alabama to locate and destroy marijuana plants drug dealers covertly cultivate.
“Within the first week, the SBI seized almost half of the total seized during the 2014 eradication operation,” SBI Director Gene Wiggins said. “With the formation of the SBI and the streamlining of state law enforcement narcotics efforts, we are able to provide a more efficient, effective narcotics program.”
Funding for the eradication efforts is provided by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program.
