DALE COUNTY: Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson flanked by Thirty Third Judicial Circuit District Attorney Kirke Adams, ABI Agents and FBI Agents held a press conference at 9 PM tonight.
Sheriff Olson said he wanted to commend the actions of Chuck Poland, the bus driver of the Dale County School bus, for his actions which saved the life of 21 children, to include Ethan, the year old child who has been held hostage for 6 days.
Sheriff Olson said Ethan was smiling, doing what you would expect a 5 year old child to do.
The media asked a lot of questions, most of which were not answered. The FBI Agent, when asked specific questions about their activities, said he could not answer those specific questions because unfortunately there will be more incidents that will require action. With that in mind, the FBI Agent can not answer those questions.
Sheriff Olson explained this is still an on going investigation. This investigation will be on going and will be worked and processed in detail. There will be an independent review team coming in to review the activities of the law enforcement in this operation.
Sheriff Olson said the primary goal of all involved was to bring Ethan home. Mission accomplished.

Thanks to each of them and what they have done behind the scenes.
Dale County Sheriff Department and All Agencies
This 6 day operation has taken a lot of patience. Since day one it has taken all the law enforcement officers could do to remain outside the bunker and not raid it in force.
However the success of this operation has been because each officer involved followed the command structure. Each and every officer involved took the directions of ranking officers and followed their directions. The successful return of this child is because this law enforcement action has not been “I” but “we”. This has been a team effort between municipal, state and federal agencies.
The success of this effort has also been as a result of all of the support staff. Both Dale County and Dothan – Houston County Emergency Management, American Red Cross, Salvation Army , different fire agencies, and hundreds of volunteers that have participated in the success.
Ozark – Dale County 911
Hats off to the communications officers of the Ozark – Dale County 911 Center. This past Tuesday the communications officers handled the call of a gunman on the school bus, upgraded to the gunman has shot the school bus driver, upgraded to the suspect has called 911 and has a hostage in an underground bunker.
The 911 communications officers did an outstanding job.
The 911 centers are the connections from the public to public safety, police/fire/medical. They gather the information to make the responding public safety units aware of what situation they are going into. They calm the callers down. They provide preliminary emergency medical treatment. They get all of the proper help and resources rolling. And they document it all.
With cell phones, one emergency produces sometimes hundreds of calls.
In this situation, hats off to those working in the 911 center last Tuesday. I listened as everything developed, and you did great,
A hero. The last of his kids has been accounted for and safe. Mr. Poland gave his life for the kids.
This will not make the pain go away for his wife and family. However, it will hopefully give them some peace to know that each and every child on the bus of Mr. Poland is alive and well.
Thanks to the help of Matt Boster, Adam Owens, Sandra Walden, Robin Altman, Ricky Beck, David Meckly, Christian Hevlin, John Curtis Stokes, John Turner and all others which helped RSN with this endeavor.
