Sen. Harri Anne Smith Delivers CDBG Grants Totaling Over $1.6 Million to Wiregrass Municipalities

DOTHAN, AL –Senator Harri Anne Smith announced the award of over $1.6 million in Community Development Block Grant funding to be used by municipalities for capital development and infrastructure improvement projects throughout the Wiregrass.
At two separate stops Senator Smith was joined by mayorsClay King of Samson, and Larry Whiddon of Taylor, to announce portions of the BLOCK grant funding designated for their respective communities.
“I’m happy to have been able to play a role in helping secure these funds, which will be used to spearhead much needed and long-overdue projects for communities throughout the Wiregrass,” stated Senator Harri Anne Smith. “A lot of people were involved in this process, and I thank Governor Bentley for his support, our local delegation, and most importantly, the good people of Wiregrass. We have great people and great leaders in the Wiregrass, and I’m honored for the opportunity to stand with them everyday as I go to work on their behalf with the goal of recruiting jobs, improving our education, and taking care of our seniors and military families.”
According to an email received by Governor Robert Bentley’s office, a complete list of the municipalities in Senator Smith’s district receiving funding includes:
City of Samson: $350,000 for resurfacing of six (6) streets.
Town of Grimes: $224,924 for drainage improvements for Chrisney Estates.
Town of Columbia: $63,578 for sewer improvements at the waste water treatment
plant.
Town of Madrid: $297,250 for housing rehab.
Town of Taylor: $347,395 for drainage system improvements.
City of Ozark: $440,000 for implementing a housing rehab and demolition program, and infrastructure imporvements.
Town of Napier Field: $350,000 for rehab and replacement of failing sewer
lines throughout the community.
Community of Eunola: $350,000 for water improvements in central Geneva
County.
The funding for these grants originated with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), but is administered at the state level through ADECA.
