MONTGOMERY: Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson and Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton and other Sheriff’s are in Montgomery at the Alabama Legislature concerning legislation.
While Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson was there, Senator’s Harri Anne Smith and Senator Jimmy Holley in a total surprise move to Sheriff Olson arranged for a brief recess of the Alabama Senate to allow Sheriff Olson to come onto the Senate Floor to recognized and honored by the Alabama Senate.
Some said Senator Smith and Holley ambushed Sheriff Olson. Senator Smith kept Olson occupied while Senator Holley was able to call for the brief recess, then Senators Smith and Holley brought Sheriff Olson on the floor, All members of the Alabama Senate then stood and gave Sheriff Olson standing ovation.
Brief note, for someone who is not a member of the Alabama Legislature, no one can come on the floor while the senate is in session. The recess allowed Senators Smith and Holley to bring Sheriff Olson onto the floor.
Senator Jimmy Holley spoke and made great comments about Sheriff Olson and his handling of the child kidnapping of young Ethan that lasted 6 six days. Sheriff Olson made some comments. Senator Smith said how blessed the wiregrass was to have a Sheriff like Wally Olson. Smith thanked him for his leadership skills in the rescue of little Ethan.
For those who do not know Sheriff Wally Olson, he is a very humble person and does not seek out the recognition. He is a man that loves his job as Sheriff, is a friend to the people, and does not like putting himself out front for the recognition.
Senator Holley and Senator Smith, when they saw Sheriff Olson at the statehouse, teamed up together to honor the Sheriff. When Olson arrived on the scene of the school bus driver being killed and young Ethan taken hostage, six days later Sheriff Olson was still on the scene. He slept very little in a travel trailer on the scene and refused to leave until the 5 year old child was rescued from captivity.
The operation was a joint operation of local, state and federal agencies. The success was a team effort. However one thing remained from beginning to end, Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson was in command of the operation.
We join Alabama Senator Harri Anne Smith, Senator Jimmy Holley and the men and women of the Alabama Senate in the recognition of Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson, his deputies and staff for a job well done. We also salute all of the local, state and federal agencies which were involved.
The ambush was pulling this off without Sheriff Olson having a hint of what was about to happen!
