Sentences handed down UPDATED @ 6:54 PM Sentencing In 30 Minutes ( 5:33 PM ) On Gilley, Spicer and Massey

MONTGOMERY:   It has been a full day since 10 AM in the Federal Courthouse in Montgomery.

The future of Terry Spicer, Ronnie Gilley and Jarrod Massey rests in the hands of one man in the United States of America. And that one man is Myron Thompson, also known as Federal Judge Myron Thompson.

The day began with Terry Spicer pleading for mercy from Judge Thompson.  Spicer said he was not a bad guy. He stated he was aware of the damage he did to the Alabama Legislature in his actions. For his actions he apologized.

Spicer said he went into politics to help the less fortunate.  Spicer described knowing Jarrod Massey from childhood and took money from him when he needed it to help him through the month. For that he tried to help Massey in his lobbying business but not by selling a vote.

Spicer’s wife testified to her medical conditions and said Terry was the primary caregiver for her and their two teenage sons.

The Washington D.C. Public Integrity Unit Lawyer said Spicer was giving nothing but excuses.

The next defendant to plead for mercy from the one person in the United States of America which holds his future in his hands was that of Ronnie Gilley.  Gilley said he took responsibility for his actions and would not make excuses for those actions. Gilley described himself as a grown man who jumped off a cliff and committed a crime.

Gilley described himself as someone who let his ego rage out of control. 

Gilley told the Judge he was on his knees, brought to his knees and asking for mercy from Judge Thompson.

Gilley’s attorney David Harrison asked Judge Thompson to allow Gilley to continue to work and support his family. Harrison has asked Judge Thompson to allow Gilley to serve 52 weekends in the Coffee County Jail. This would allow Gilley to continue to work, provide jobs and income for his family.

Harrison said Gilley has been punished because he has lost his reputation and all of his material possessions.

Gilley’s wife Deidra described Ronnie as a generous man. She said Gilley would help people when they were in need. Mrs. Gilley said Ronnie would help people during tough times with thousands of dollars at Christmas.

Massey called witnesses this afternoon. We do not have updates because the court will not allow computers or telephones in the courtroom.

We understand in 30 minutes the sentence will be announced. ( 5:32 PM ).

The court has taken a recess until 6 PM. Then the one man who holds the future of Gilley, Spicer and Massey in his hands will hand down the sentence.

Reports are this afternoon has been heated. The team that traveled from Washington D.C. in the Public Integrity Unit has argued against the defendants. Much of the heat is generated because of the differences in the sentence recomendations from the Washington D.C. folks.

There were ZERO convictions from any of the defendants that were charged that forced the Washington D.C. Public Integrity Unit to trial. In two trials the Washington D.C. only convicted those which plead guilty. When they were forced to trial they got ZERO convictions.

Judge Thompson has sentenced Ronnie Gilley to 6 1/2 years on his pea of guilty.

Judge Thompson has sentenced Terry Spicer to 57 months. That is 4 years and 9 months.

Gilley 80 months...which is 6 years and 8 months.

Massey to 65 months which is 5 years and 5 months.

Judge Thompson has ordered the defendants to turn themselves into custody on August 27, 2012 by 2 PM.

Jarrod Massey is given credit for the 9 months he spent in jail. Massey turned himself in before the trial and served 9 months.

Ronnie Gilley was given the 80 month sentence. Gilley was ordered to 3 years probation per offense to run consecutively. Gilley was ordered to pay a fine of $ 200,000.00.

Terry Spicer was given the 57 month sentence. Spicer was ordered to 2 years probation and a fine of $ 40,000.00. Along with the sentence and fine Spicer was ordered to 80 hours of community service.

Jarrod Massey was given the 65 month sentence. Massey was ordered to 3 years probation per offense to run consecutively. Massey was ordered to pay a fine of $ 20,000.00. Massey was given credit for the 9 months he served in jail. That time was when Massey voluntarily turned himself into jail.
