ASHFORD:   For decades business owners around Houston County have let some  employees leave for emergencies. Leave while still being on the clock.

Until this week, the City of Ashford supported the Ashford Volunteer Rescue Unit. But for some reason, Ashford Mayor Rusty Burgess has no benevolence left in him.

A long time volunteer in Houston County Emergency Services has been Ray McNeal. He and his family were key players in the beginning of the volunteer fire services of this county, in particular the eastside of Houston County.  For decades, you would McNeal with either the fire or rescue, day and night. Donating his time and energies.

Years ago under former Ashford Mayor Bryan Alloway, McNeal started working with the City of Ashford. Mayor Alloway realized the importance of the medical service and has always allowed McNeal to leave and make rescue runs on the ambulance. Even on the clock.

Alloway realized the hardship of volunteer service and importance of qualified people being available. Mayor Alloway thought the people’s emergency medical needs were important.

Now Mayor Rusty Burgess has no care for the people’s emergency medical service. He has stopped McNeal from leaving his post with the Ashford Street Department to make medical runs. He can clock out.

So if you see someone in the street gasping for breath having a heart attack in the streets of Ashford, or bleeding to death from a car wreck, it might be all volunteers are having to work and their employers do not care, just as Mayor Burgess.
