HENRY COUNTY: In regards to the article last evening about Henry County Coroner Derek Wright not being notified of the death on Cleveland Street.
Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox apologized to Coroner Wright yesterday on the scene. In Sheriff Maddox defense, the scene was not his but that of Headland Police. So it was Headland Police responsibility to make the notifications. Sheriff Maddox got caught in the controversy because he just happen to be on the scene.
Last week Henry County Sheriff Maddox and his department did promptly notify Coroner Wright on the find of the body on Highway 95 North. Normally the Sheriff Department is prompt on the notification of the Coroner.
The notification in Headland was the third of which Coroner Wright has had issues in prompt notification. That is what resulted in the issues which resulted yesterday. Headland Police Chief Mark Jones did contact Coroner Wright last evening and a meeting to resolve the issues is forthcoming.
While In Discussion
While this issue is in discussion, the new Henry County Probate Judge, the Mayor of Headland and the Mayor of Abbeville need to meet. These three need to discuss the combination of resources between all three agencies, to include dispatch.
It makes absolutely no sense what so ever for Headland to have their own dispatcher and Abbeville to have their own dispatcher, and both agencies only have one officer on duty. They could combine the resources, save money and improve service to the residents of Headland, Abbeville and Henry County.
After the Probate Judge and two Mayors meet, they then need to bring the Sheriff in. After discussion bring in the Headland and Abbeville Police Chief’s.
The Probate Judge and Mayor’s control the purse strings. He who controls the money controls the game. The mandate needs to be clearly established – resolve any issues and make decisions which are in the best interest of public safety and the people of the entire county. Stop wasting money on 911 operators and dispatchers in both locations.
One system can cover the entire county and all agencies will be better notified and responsive.
With a combination of resources, there could be 10 officers on the street 24/7 covering the entire county. Instead of like it is now, this last summer a Henry County Sheriff Deputy came from the back of Hardridge Creek Park at the lake, running lights and siren, headed to Headland to back up a Headland Police Officer on a Saturday afternoon.
Or there is a robbery in Headland. And Henry County and Abbeville know nothing about it.
Combine the resources and work in unison. Your departments and county are not large enough to be separate.
While you have your law enforcement administrators, the financial mandate must come from the Probate Judge, Headland Mayor and Abbeville Mayor. With your mandate, things will happen.
Someone made the suggestion, the Henry County Jail is in Abbeville which gives the people of Abbeville someone present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Put the communications in Headland which will provide 24 hours a day 7 days per week in Headland a person.
Make the Chief of Headland a Chief Deputy of the southern end and the Chief of Abbeville the Chief Deputy of the Northern end of the county. All three agencies combined into one, making more investigators, better intelligence ( information ) more officers on the streets and less overhead.
Back To The Coroner
Thanks to Sheriff Maddox for his promptness with Coroner Wright. And again, the Sheriff Department usually notifies the Coroner promptly.
Thanks to Chief Jones for contacting the Coroner and the issue getting resolved.
