HOUSTON COUNTY:   This morning Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza ordered additional deputies to work.

This morning summer vacation ended for students across the Houston County School System. As students returned Sheriff Valenza had the additional deputies at the schools to make sure all arrived safely.

Sheriff Valenza said children and their safety are our top priority. Valenza wanted to make sure that all of the children, school staff and parents traveled the roads safe and arrived at school safe. With that in mind the department worked all schools across Houston County with extra manpower.

Sheriff Valenza has also increased the School Resource Officers in the school system. For more than a decade Randy Anderson, known by many children as "Deputy Randy" has worked the schools. He ran from Columbia to Wicksburg, Ashford to Cottonwood, Webb to Rehobeth, meeting the needs of students and faculty.

Sheriff Valenza has re-assigned Bobby Hopkins from Criminal Investigation to assist Lt. Anderson in the service to the schools.

Sheriff Valenza wants to create positive relationships with the children of the schools. And he wants to effectively assist the schools with their needs. Valenza wishes the financial resources were available for school resources full time at every school in the county, but that is not possible at this time.

UPDATED @ 3:40 PM

The Houston County School Board provides funds for Sheriff Valenza to place the deputies for three days as school begins.

This is a joint adventure of the Houston County School Board and Houston County Sheriff.
