DOTHAN:   Dothan 911 dispatched a motor vehicle accident with injuries, Highway 231 North and Westgate Parkway. The call also said a Houston County Sheriff Unit was "on the scene".


The Houston County Sheriff unit "on the scene" was none other than Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza.


The brave comes from the fact that Sheriff Valensa HIMSELF was in the intersection directing traffic. Sheriff Valenza remained on the scene and rendered aid and assistance until Dothan Police was on the scene and able to take over the call.


Sheriff Valenza drives an unmarked SUV. The vehicle is equipped with undercover blue lights, rasdios to include Houston County Sheriff Department, Dothan Police, Houston County Volunteer Fire, Alabama State Troopers and other agencies.


Sheriff Valenza also gets on the streets and works. This past Saturday evening Sheriff Valenza was on the streets working and being visible. And guess what? He does not have to seek re-election for 4 years!!!


This afternoon Sheriff Valenza was seen leaving the Sheriff Office at 5:20 PM. The office closes at 4:30 PM.


Sheriff Valenza makes less than $ 80,000.00 per year as compared to the salary of Dothan Police Chief who makes around $ 94,000.00 per year. Sheriff Valenza manages over 100 in the Sheriff Department, around 100 in the Corrections at Houston County Sheriff Department, a jail population of around 400 persons, a communications division that dispatches for:


1. Houston County Sheriff Communications dispatches All law enforcement agencies in Houston County, with exception of Alabama State Troopers and Dothan Police Department.


Dispatches for Ashford Police, Webb Police, Kinsey Police, Columbia Police, Gordon Police, Cottonwood Police, Taylor Police, Houston County Sheriff Deputies, and Houston County Coroner. 


2. Houston County Sheriff Communications dispatches ALL ambulances in Houston County, to include Pilcher's Ambulance when responding in the county.


3. Houston County Sheriff Communications dispatches ALL fire departments in Houston County, except Dothan Fire Department.


The Sheriff is the ONLY elected law enforcement officer. That means the Sheriff is directly responsible to the people.
