HOUSTON COUNTY:   The purpose of this article is not to exploit, embarrass or anger family tonight. But it is a simple fact of what actually occurred.

Ashford Police and Houston County Sheriff Deputies responded to shots fired along with a person threatening to take his life.

Ashford Police Officer Larry Flowers was the first officer on the scene. Flowers is a long term steady hand in law enforcement in Ashford. Officer Flowers spotted the subject with the weapon. Being a wise and experienced officer, Flowers observed the subject at a distance until backup deputies arrived.

As the officers approached the person holding the weapon spotted the officers. At that time the subject pulled the trigger taking his life. Doing so right in front of the deputies and Officer Flowers.

Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza, when notified, immediately left his house and responded to the scene. Sheriff Valenza immediately contacted a grief counselor as he responded to the scene.

Sheriff Valenza gathered the initial responding units to meet with the grief counselor. While criminal investigators worked the scene, Valenza wanted the first responders who witnessed the event to discuss what they saw and talk it out.

Law Enforcement,  Fire and EMS are always faced with devastating and tragic events. With that in mind Sheriff Valenza works to be proactive in making sure the deputies welfare and emotional needs are met. That is the purpose of his swift action. Because the chain of events they observed first hand are - well very tragic.

Houston County Commissioner Doug Sinqefield, when he learned of what the officers observed, responded to the scene. The commissioner wanted to check on the welfare of the deputies and officer as well as the persons family.

Sheriff Valenza, Chief Deputy Jeff Carlile and Captain Bill Rafferty responded.
