Singer, Alabama Native Percy Sledge dies at 73

Alabama native and award winning soul singer Percy Sledge died Tuesday at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was 73 and had been diagnosed with liver cancer in 2014.
Sledge is best remembered for his 1960’s hit “When A Man Loves A Woman.” The song was on the soundtrack the 1986 Oscar winning film “Platoon.” Other popular songs from Sledge include “Take Time To Know Her” and “Warm and Tender Love.”
Sledge worked in a series of agricultural jobs in the fields in Leighton, AL before taking a job as hospital orderly according to the website Wikipedia. Through the mid-1960s, he toured with the Esquires Combo on weekends, while working at the hospital during the week.
He won several music awards, was a Grammy nominee, and performed at President George H. Bush’s 1989 inauguration.
