GENEVA COUNTY: A quiet little neighborhood in Slocomb was getting ready for bed last nite, when they heard it. First a few loud pops, then BOOM! Earl Carne’s lifetime hobby was going up in flames. His shed and woodshop, along with all his wood, other materials, and tools all burned up. He and his family are thankful for the firefighters from Slocomb and Hartford who kept the fire from spreading to any nearby homes, including their own. Earl served in the army, then came home only to end up getting both his legs cut off working on the railroad. He’s been in a wheelchair for years and is known to roll around Slocomb visiting with friends in the neighborhood and even goes downtown on occasion. Earl’s not a quitter! He also suffered a stroke and only has the use of one arm. Yet he still continues to do woodwork. He had an old woodburning stove in is shed, and would keep it going to keep warm as he worked. Like everything else, winter never slows Earl down. That little area was HIS WORLD! He lost his wife a few years back so his woodwork is what keeps him busy. He’ll give you something if you admire it for too long. With Christmas approaching, he’s been busy making jewelry boxes for all his grandgirls and they are beautiful. Thankfully, they were in the house. So if you have any tools you’d like to take to Earl, he’d be so blessed. Maybe you have just one too many saws, hammers, screwdrivers, or whatever. Maybe you had a loved one who has passed and those tools have just been collecting dust. He needs it all, big and small.  Larger items needed are a planner wood saw, a scroll saw, a grinder, and a belt sander. If you don’t have tools or wood ... let’s not forget he needs WOOD ... maybe you’d like to make a monetary donation. His daughter, Connie can be reached at 334-596-9927. They also need help in cleaning up the mess. His address is Earl Carnes 871 Ida St. Slocomb, AL 36375. ’Tis the season to be thankful. Why not show your thanks for what you have by helping out this ol’ veteran who would give you the shirt off his back.
