DAPHNE, Alabama -- TheShadow Barons seemed to be on a mission Saturday night to shower the throng of Carnival revelers with as many Mardi Gras treasures as possible. And the crowd loved every second of it.
Unlike last year when the Barons’ Saturday parade was postponed due to rain, a beautiful night with temperatures around 60 provided smooth sailing this year. The group’s surprise grand marshal was a huge hit. Big Al, the University of Alabama’s elephant mascot, received round after round of “Roll Tide” call-outs as he waved to the festive masses.
The Barons were unbelievably generous with their wide variety of throws. They also enlisted quite a lineup of truck bands that did not disappoint. Talented high school bands from Daphne, Spanish Fort, LeFlore and Slocomb also impressed the applauding crowd.
The 14-year-old Eastern Shore krewe’s theme this year was based on the Jimmy Buffett song, “Son of a Son of a Sailor.” The procession included the group’s 10 custom-built, nautical-themed floats. The Units included the Emblem float, Volcanic Island, Barons Tavern, Death Ship, Swamp Shack, Baron’s Island Fortress, Baron’s Battleship, Pirate Ship, Baron’s Bay House and Margaritaville.
NOTE: Below is an article that came from the Mobile Press register.
I would like to thank the Slocomb High School Band for performing in The Shadow Barons 14th Annual Mardi Gras Parade in Daphne, Alabama on February 9th, 2013.
