COFFEE CO., AL (WSFA) -A 5-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after he was mauled by a dog while playing outside in Coffee County Sunday.
According to family members, the dog was chained in the backyard when he attacked the boy.
"I'm just glad he didn't grab him by the head," said Billy Marx, the boy's uncle.
The boy's mom ran inside for a second to answer the phone, and the next thing she heard was screaming. That's when the mom jumped into action to save her little boy.
She grabbed the dog, but he wouldn't let go of the boy's leg. She told her daughter to grab a knife from the kitchen.
"The mom had to stab the dog with a kitchen knife in order to get the dog to release from the kid. The family friend finished putting the dog down and when law enforcement got there they had transferred the kid to Enterprise hospital," said Coffee County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth.
Marx never thought something like this would happen to his family.
