LEE COUNTY:
Bloggers, Facebookers and Twitterers have reported it a fact — that Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard has reached a plea deal ahead of his trial on state ethics charges later this month.
But his lawyer says it just isn't true.
"There's not a grain of truth to it," Hubbard's lead defense lawyer, Bill Baxley, said on Wednesday. "There hasn't been a deal, and there won't be a deal."
Baxley's emphatic denials follow a bubbling churn of gossip spread by, among others, Donald Watkins, a lawyer, banker and political gadfly who has used his Facebook page as a platform for lobbying grenades at various Alabama politicians, including Hubbard and Gov. Robert Bentley.
Last month, Watkins said on Facebook that he had heard of a plea deal in the offing, and on Tuesday, he reported it as a verified fact. That post included specifics, such as the 18 months Hubbard had agreed to spend in jail and the potential targets Hubbard would testify against — Bentley, former Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and Alabama Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh.
