Have any of your prescriptions changed? Have you stopped taking a narcotic pain medicationand have some left? Have you lost a loved one and need to dispose of their old medications?
On Wednesday, April 27, 2016, from 8:00AM to 4:00PM, the Elba Police Department and SpectraCare Health Systems will present an opportunity for the public to help fight prescription drug abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially harmful expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.Bring your medications for disposal to the Elba Recreation Center 764 Claxton Ave. This is a free, anonymous service for the community. Just drop it off and go. We’ll take care of the rest!
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Prescription drug abuse rates in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines-flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash-both pose potential safety and health hazards.
