The chairman of the House General Fund budget committee said today he will run for speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives if acting Speaker Victor Gaston does not.
Rep. Steve Clouse, R-Ozark, has served in the Legislature for 22 years and said he believes he has the background and knowledge for the leadership position.
Clouse said Gaston would be a good choice, as well.
Gaston, as the speaker pro tem, moved into the position of acting speaker when Mike Hubbard was convicted of ethics charges and removed from office last week.
Gaston has told AL.com that he is leaning toward seeking the position.
One possible contender withdrew his name from consideration.
Rep. Bill Poole, R-Tuscaloosa, told the Montgomery Advertiser that because he has three young children and a full-time law practice, he did not think now would be the right time to pursue the speaker's post.
Poole is chairman of the House education budget committee.
