Severe storms rolled across central Alabama this morning, flooding roads and leaving homes in the dark.

At the height of the storms, about 32,000 Alabama Power customers had no electricity. Crews were dispatched quickly to restore power. However, their first concern was safety.

Flooding was reported on roads in Alabaster, Pelham, Vestavia Hills, Birmingham, and other places in and around Jefferson County. The high waters even overtook a police car.

Heavy rain has blanketed Alabama this week including computer generated reports of up to 15 inches of rainfall south of Troy.
