Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people in the United States. The alarming rates at which young people in our region are taking their own lives is astounding. Suicide is becoming an all too common option among our youth. SpectraCare Health Systems is urging everyone to take notice and be proactive in the lives of others. Any one sign or a combination of signs should be taken seriously. Take notice to verbal suicide threats, expressions of helplessness or hopelessness, daring or risky behaviors, depression, lack of interest in planning for the future, talking about having no reason to live, sleeping too much or too little, sudden changes in appetite, self injury, displaying extreme mood swings, withdrawing from others or seeking isolation, increased use of drugs or alcohol, or seeking access to pills, weapons, or other means to complete suicide.
If you know someone who you believe may be at risk or considering suicide, you are urged to trust your instincts and seek help. Even if faced with some resistance, be persistent and seek help on their behalf immediately. You should begin asking direct questions and listen with a non-judgmental ear to the information being shared with you. The questions you ask will likely open the lines of communication for someone to share how they feel. Additionally, you should not leave that person alone and you should reach out to local professional resources.
SpectraCare Health Systems is a regional community based system of care that is available to assist those considering suicide, as well as those coping with the trauma following the loss of loved ones. Information about counseling services can be received by contacting the Houston County Clinic at 334-794-0731. Also, an after-hours emergency help line is accessible by calling 1-800-951-4357.
