On 7-16-14 at 11:03 pm deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office were at an address on Flamingo Lane attempting to serve an arrest warrant.
As they were returning to their patrol vehicles, one officer observed a male seated in the front passenger seat of a car that was parked in the yard. No one was behind the wheel of the vehicle.
The subject, later identified as Robert L Garrett, quickly ducked down behind the dash in an effort to conceal himself from the officer. They observed a small baggie of marijuana on the floorboard between the Garrett’s legs in plain view.
Garrett was ordered out of the vehicle. As the officers took control of one of his hands he was advised to place his other hand on the roof of the car.
As the officers attempted to handcuff Garrett, he pushed off of the vehicle. As he did so he collided with one of the officers, knocking him backwards, before fleeing on foot.
As Garrett was running down Flamingo Lane toward Merritt’s Mill Rd. one of the officers deployed his taser and the suspect was taken into custody.
During the course of a post-miranda interview, Garrett admitted that the marijuana was his and admitted to attempting to hide from the officers in the car. A small baggie of suspected powder cocaine, several small pieces of suspected crack cocaine, and a small amount of marijuana were found in a cigarette pack adjacent to Garrett.
After being medically cleared by Jackson County Fire Rescue, Garrett was lodged in the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
