A shooting inside a local Walmart on Sunday left one Montgomery police officer injured and the suspect was shot and captured after a chase in Louisiana.
The incident took place about 8:30 a.m. at theWalmart on East Boulevard. Officer Robert Hubbard was shot while attempting to apprehend a suspect, later identified as Matthew Lawrencereno Wright, 31, in a store theft.
John Brown, serving as interim police chief for the Montgomery Police Department, said that during the confrontation it appeared Wright produced a firearm and fired multiple times at Hubbard. Police say Wright then carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene.
Local and state officials spent most of Sunday attempting to locate Wright, who had stolen a gray Chrysler 300. Wright was located in northeastern Louisiana before 5 p.m. when police officers in the town of Ferriday located the vehicle. The Louisiana State Police joined in a pursuit that turned into a foot chase when Wright crashed the Chrysler, carjacked a Nissan Altima at gunpoint and continued to flee. A short time later, he abandoned the Altima and fled into woods on foot. Confirmation of his capture came before 6 p.m. Sunday.
