The Cultural Arts Center is proud to announce their summer line up of classes and workshops in partnership with the Alabama State Arts Council, and the Wells Fargo Foundation. Classes have been structured to offer something for everyone school age from the Wiregrass Area.

To register for daily classes or any of the workshops listed, contact the Cultural Arts Center at 334.699.2787 or email them at Registration forms are available here or  can be picked up at the center office or through email. Registration and payment must be in person at the Center. Cash or checks are accepted only.

If you are in need of a scholarship, please complete a registration form and bring with you a copy of your free/reduced lunch certification letter from the school and see Ann Cotton at the Cultural Arts Center. Each class has a certain number of scholarships available and once those slots are gone, you will be put on a waiting list.

Children's Camps & Classes


Windchime Art (Beginner Level)                                                                      
Students will learn the basics of hand-building ,  using tools & various textures to create 2 wind-chimes: 1 for themselves and 1 to be donated to Headstart’s Discovery Garden this fall to help pre-school students learn about wind, clay, and the role of chimes in the garden.

Free Form Garden Art (Advanced Level)                                              
Students will both hand build & use the wheels to create 2 free form garden art pieces : 1 for themselves and 1 to    donate to HeadStart’s Discovery Garden to help children learn about homes for garden creatures, clay, and how    garden art attracts great bugs for the garden! The garden art can sit on the ground, hang from a fence, or be attached to a pole or bamboo rod. Use your imagination!

Portraiture & Drawing
Students will learn basics of drawing (line, perspective, shadowing, detail) as well as simple steps to drawing faces and portraits. Students will need to bring their OWN SKETCHBOOK, SKETCH PENCILS, ERASERS, and CHARCOAL, all available at Hobby Lobby or Michaels in kits. Larger portrait paper will be supplied.

Big Art                                                                  
Students learn how the muralists create their large pieces of art by creating one of their very own using a grid system to enlarge your design. Then paint this large piece of art with acrylics to make it come alive. All art will be suitable for hanging in your room.

Creative Artist’s Lab                                                  
Students will combine ordinary art making materials with non-traditional materials and techniques  to create experimental art pieces, from optical illusion, to bubbles and watercolor. All using science based art principles and design. Nothing can blow up in this lab though Mom!

Around the World with Art                                                                                                    
Students will study and make art from other countries such as Africa, Australia, China, Russia, & Canada, approximately one piece each day. A fun way to learn a little culture, a little art, a lot of history!

The Magic of Mythical Creatures                                                              
This is the class for those students who love the dragons and creatures of the magical world. Come learn how to draw those magical creatures and improve your ability to create these flights of fancy.

Make It ~ Take It Art Days                                                                                             
Complete an art project suitable for framing in just an hour. Work with crayons, watercolors, acrylics, string, glue, tissue paper, and a variety of other textures and mediums to create your own work of art.

Felting  Fun

Students in this camp will explore Shibori, Stamp Printing, Stenciling and Batik on fabric as they work with commercial dyes.    Students will create original designs on T-shirts, Bags, Aprons, and Scarves.

Mom & Me : Salsa Line Dancing!                                                                                        
Learn the latest Salsa line dance moves while having a blast dancing with your child.  Great workout for both, lots of great music, and a fun way to stay in shape this summer and learn dance.

Summer Violin     
Learn to play the violin this summer with Eugene Conner, Chairman of the Southeast District of the Alabama Orchestral Association.  All learning materials provided as well as a mid-morning snack. Each student will need to have their own instrument which can be purchased or rented from local music stores.

Beginner Guitar   
This fun camp is for the student who wants to learn to play guitar with friends. All learning materials provided including mid-morning snack. Students must bring their own guitar and picks. They will learn chords and notes to fun songs.

Expressivo Chamber Orchestra Camp  
This is a unique chamber orchestra consisting of select students playing violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, tuba and percussion with emphasis on playing with expression. Students memorize   selections for which they will learn to move in an artistic way on stage. thus the expression. Music selections range from Back to Pop. This will be a continuing ensemble withrehearsals and performances throughout the coming school year.

Instrumentation will be limited, so there are auditions for camp. Auditions are Friday June 14.

ADULT Summer Fun!


Natural Dying Workshop   
This is the workshop to DYE for! Bring your own lunch both dates and students can contact instructor about bringing their own fiber and cloth. This is a BEGINNING dying class that will teach the basics of working with natural dyes. There will be plenty of time to work with your own ideas, fabrics, patterns, and projects in this workshop. You are only limited by your imagination!   This class will require work and is for ADULTS and HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. Can be open to Middle School Age Students but contact with instructor imperative prior to registration.

TUESDAY NIGHTS ARE EMPTY BOWLS NIGHTS                                                  
June11 and July 16.                            

We have already begun work on the 2nd annual Empty Bowls Dothan project to help stock the food pantry at the Wiregrass Food Bank and to help the Cultural Arts Center buy more pottery wheels for our pottery studio. This is an excellent idea for Sunday School groups, book clubs, supper clubs, even just friends who support the Wiregrass Food Bank and the Cultural Arts Center.

Thursday Evening Classes                                                              
Come spend Thursday nights with us and dabble in the arts while enjoying a light summer meal  provided by “Do & Dine” catering. A variety of beverages will be provided. 
What better way to spend time in the arts, enjoy the company of other art loving friends, and grab a light meal all in the same spot!  Registration is required. Cancellations must be one week prior to the start of the class or we are unable to provide refunds. Tell your friends and get a group together!

An Open Ended Painting Class for Adults.     

Come spend some time painting whatever you want to paint, big or little, on canvas. From detailed acrylics to funky art  to watercolors, Let Tim help bring your ideas to life in front of your eyes. There are no rules to this class, just the fun of creating and dabbling.
