DOTHAN: Doing research on the City of Dothan Legal Department, the minutes of the Dothan Commission Meeting of November 8, 1977 reflect the true meaning of Municipal Court.
The Dothan City Attorney was Wade Baxley. Noteworthy - the Dothan City Attorney was the appointment of the Mayor and Dothan Commission.
Baxley was discussion new legislation passed by the Alabama Legislature which governed Municipal Courts. The discussion begins on the bottom of page 3.
The Mayor/Commission appointed City Attorney explains why the City of Dothan should keep their municipal court rather than District Court.
Guess what the number one reason for keeping Dothan Municipal Court?
1.Loss of revenue to the city.
So, Dothan Municipal Court is not bout truth, justice and integrity. It is about REVENUE!
Guess what the number two reason for keeping Dothan Municipal Court?
Loss of control by the Police Department and commissioners to adopt and enforce the City ordinances.
WAIT
I always thought that Court was to be a independent system and listen to the true facts and circumstances, and render a fair and truthful verdict based on what the law read and the facts presented.
But according to the Dothan City Attorney ( appointed by the Mayor and Commission ), it was about (1) Revenue and (2) Control by Police and Commission.
