Tonight while on patrol Houston County Deputy Leck Killingsworth; was patrolling the parking lot at the Raceway on U S 231 at the Alabama-Florida Line when the attendant flagged him down. The attendant told Deputy Killingsworth about this older black lab that had been hanging around the store today.

Deputy Killingsworth located the dog and befriended it. Deputy Killingsworth is an animal lover at heart and just could not let the dog go. Deputy Killingsworth checked the dog’s collier and found a Rabies Tag with the name of the Veterinarian (Dr. Strickland) and a number.

Deputy Killingsworth called dispatch and gave them the information on who to contact and they did. Mean while Deputy Killingsworth called Lori Woodham at the Care Rescue Shelter to see if she could help. Mrs. Woodham called and made arrangements for some to take the dog until the owner could be found.

In the mean time Dr. Strickland went to his office and cross referenced the number that was provided to him by Deputy Killingsworth. Dr. Strickland was able to identify the dog as Shadow and provided a name and phone number to the Deputy and then he called the owner.

After contact was made Deputy Killingsworth loaded Shadow into his patrol car and went to Cottonwood to meat the owners. The family was so happy to have their Shadow back. Apparently last week when the storms rolled through the area with the wind and lightening the dog got scared and ran off.

We understand the family lived on County Road 55 between Ashford and Cottonwood. Shadow had been missing for over a week and chances of finding him was getting smaller with every passing day. From where he lived to where he was found was several miles away.

Thanks to the deputy Shadow is now safely home and happy to be back with his family.

It’s deputies like this that make difference is someone’s life, I spoke to Deputy Killingsworth tonight and he said he was just doing his job. He was happy to have helped the family get the beloved dog safely home.
