Officers and helicopter crews from around the state will meet Santa Claus to load up with bags of toys.

They're delivering them one helicopter at a time to the Children's of Alabama's Sugar Plum Shop for the 3rd annual Operation Toy Drop on December 5.  Members of law enforcement say it's a chance to turn a sad time into a happy one.

"It's already tough enough for them to be there and not be at home experiencing the fresh joys of Christmas, so we just try to help out in that situation,” said Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson.

"This program was thought of about three years ago,” said Chief Deputy Tim McDonald with the Dale County Sheriff's Office.  “It was something that came about as what we, as law enforcement, could do to reach out and to give back to our children.”

"We are the only free-standing hospital in the State of Alabama, taking care of kids is all that we do, and there's never really a good time to be in the hospital, but especially during Christmas and with small children,” said Angie Sherrill, community outreach coordinator with the Children's of Alabama.

Children and families can watch from the hospital windows as 15 or more helicopters deliver the toys, which will be donated to the hospital's toy store, the Sugar Plum Shop.  More than 500 children received gifts from the shop last year.

"We just want to help the kids, even if it's just one kid to 100 kids to 1000 kids, anything just to put a smile on their face,” said Jordan Claasen with the Dale County Dusters, one of several organizations collecting donations for the cause.

The Dale County Dusters would like to thank Superintendent Donny Bynum and Tractor Supply of Ozark for their contributions.

For information on how you can help, you can visit the Children's of Alabama website.

In case of bad weather, the December 5 date will be rescheduled for December 12.
